    Description

    -  Offered here is a Very Rare and IMPORTANT RENE BOIVIN ART DECO silver mirror tiles [tesserae] and .950 Sterling Silver compact – created with hundreds of tiny silver mirror tiles, each 3mm square. Let me say at the outset the pictures do not do this item any justice - it is quite beautiful in real life. The firm of Boivin created a very limited grouping of extremely rare and highly prized Art Deco mirrored jewelry and accessories during the mid-1930s  - this compact is a wonderful example. The piece is signed with the Head of Minerva and J T or J L in a diamond lozenge  -  possibly a Jean Troitin design for Boivin. There is a 3
    rd
mark I can’t identify in the bottom inside of the compact. A similar compact, also in .950 Silver with gold mirror by Troitin, can be found among research records. The compact measures 3” x 2 ½”- it is 3/8” thick. The mirror tiles are in excellent condition, considering the age and type of application  - the top and bottom flat surfaces are nearly perfect – truly there is so little of concern - a small crack, a little nick but almost perfect. The sides show 2 tiles with cracks and 3 or 4 with minor loss – all of this goes largely unnoticed against the full effect of this unique French Art Deco treasure. The closure features slightly extended horizontal bars, opposed on the top and bottom for easy and secure opening. Note that we have not attempted to wipe off or freshen the appearance – the compact has been in long estate storage and has some naturally acquired surface dust etc – sold exactly as found.  All Boivin jewelry and accessories are rare and important – the House of Boivin always had an impeccable reputation, beginning in the Mid-19
    th
Century and lasting well into the mid-20
    th
Century -  in later years they had no retail outlet and seldom sold to other than private clients. The firm no longer exists. The small advertising card was found inside the compact – obviously a prized object, precious to the former owner who likely purchased the compact in Paris 80 years ago. What an Outrageous Xmas gift this would make. Out of a very wealthy several generation Pennsylvania estate – buyer pays 19.00 safe bubble shipping, Insurance and tracking in USA
