OFFERING AN ANTIQUE EARLY COLONIAL AMERICAN STERLING SILVERLARGE SUGAR TONGS BY J. HUNTER
SEE VIEWS ABOVE
JOHN HUNTER WORKED IN ALBANY, NEW YORK
and ALSO IN NEW YORK CITY BETWEEN
THE YEARS 1835 to 1847
HE IS LISTED IN HOFFMAN'S 1845 ALBANY NY DIRECTORY AS A JEWELER AND WATCHMAKER
AT 42 SOUTH PEARL STREET
FINE ANTIQUE CONDITION
THESE HAVE BEEN TESTED BY A JEWELER AND ARE STERLING
(not Coin, as I had previously said)
I HAVE CLEANED THESE AND THEY ARE JUST BEAUTIFUL, AS YOU CAN SEE
SIZE about 6 1/2" LONG x 1 5/8" WIDE x 1" HIGH
INITIALS "W M C" ON THE ROUNDED END
NICELY DETAILED TALONS THAT LOOK LIKE BIRD CLAWS
THIS IS STAMPED "J. HUNTER" ON ONE SIDE INTERIOR
ALSO STAMPED WITH A CRESCENT MOON, THE LETTER "D", AND AN EAGLE IN
CARTOUCHE BOXES ON THE OTHER INTERIOR SIDE
I STILL CAN NOT DETERMINE THE MEANING OF THIS SECOND MARK YET SINCE IT'S NOT LISTED UNDER "D"
BUT I'LL KEEP LOOKING!
I THINK THIS SECOND MARK MAY BE A "FAKE" MARK TO MAKE FOLKS THINK THEY WERE ENGLISH HALLMARKS
